Despite receiving dismal feedback from the judges, the first House Rules renovation of 2018 got a big thumbs-up from Adelaide couple Jared Petrenko and Jess Dover.
While Sunday night’s episode saw judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen deliver a series of scathing remarks including “absolutely repugnant” and “firing-squad chic”, Petrenko and Dover said that overall they were thrilled with the New York-inspired makeover.
“We were really happy with the house,” Dover said.
“You’re so overwhelmed by it because it’s such a drastic change.”
Both agree that the contestants did well with what they admit were “pretty hard” House Rules.
There was clear confusion among some of the contestants, with one team forced to google the word “iconic” and another “the Big Apple”.
“We were a little bit worried that teams might, I suppose, go all out and go way over the top,” Petrenko said. “We kind of had an idea of what we’d like to see but we were very nervous at the same time. You never know how people are going to interpret the rules.”
The couple were gracious about some of the more unfortunate design decisions, including WA pair Chiara and David Clarson painting their hallway pink, resulting in a bizarre half-pink, half-white wall — a decision that judge Wendy Moore branded “criminal”.
“Paint’s easy to fix,” Petrenko said. “That’s probably the only thing that stands out. We absolutely love the house and everything that was done and it’s so much better than what we originally had. Apart from that one bit of painting there’s nothing you can really complain about.”
The pair, who have been dating for two years, said they were now gearing up for Jess to move into the former bachelor pad.
“The plan is to move in right away,” Jess said.
“Having it being just boys for the past four/five years, it’s not somewhere that was enticing to move into and I’m just so, so lucky that we can move into a house like this that’s made for us.”
The House Rules teams will now head to Hope Island in Queensland to renovate Mel and Dave Willmot’s house.
“We’re pretty nervous now, knowing that the teams have two renos under their belt and we’ve only got one (the auction house in week one),” Dover said.
“We’re pumped to get into it but we are nervous ... we’re going to probably try and do something pretty amazing to get us back in line with everyone else.”
“Trying to learn all these things on top of trying to make all the decisions is what makes it so hard, and what brings out the stressful side of things, so I’m sure there’s gonna be plenty of interesting moments on camera unfortunately,” Petrenko laughed.
